What is the Montessori method?
The Montessori method is an educational approach developed by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator, at the beginning of the 20th century. This method is based on the observation that children have a natural desire to learn and that they learn better through practical and self-directed activities.
The Montessori method emphasises the use of sensory materials to teach children about the world around them. These materials, such as blocks, beads, and shapes, are designed to be aesthetically pleasing and easy to manipulate, and they are used to teach children concepts such as size, shape, and colour. Children are encouraged to explore and manipulate the materials, and they have the freedom to choose the activities they want to work on.
The Montessori method also places a strong emphasis on independence, and children are encouraged to take charge of their own learning. This is achieved by providing a prepared environment designed to meet the needs of each individual child. The classroom is set up with different areas of interest, such as a reading area, a mathematics area, and a science area, and the children are free to move around and explore these areas at their leisure.
The Montessori method values socialisation, and children are encouraged to work together and help each other out. This is done through activities such as group projects and circle times, where children have the opportunity to share their ideas and learn from one another.
In addition to traditional Montessori materials, this approach to education also includes activities such as music, art, and movement, which are used to stimulate the children's senses and foster creativity. The Montessori method also encourages outdoor activities and nature walks, which help children connect with the natural world and develop respect for the environment.
In summary, the Montessori method is an approach which emphasises hands-on, self-directed learning, independence, and socialisation. It is based on the belief that children have a natural desire to learn and that they learn best by discovering the world around them. The Montessori method is used in many private and public schools around the world, as well as in homeschooling and other alternative educational environments.
